About the Game
It's Not You, It's Us is a 3D point-and-click adventure about a group of animal characters coming together to make their town a better place. The player explores a cozy town as they meet the Urbanimals that call it home, and discover that taking care of the environment, and each other, is something nobody can do on their own.
The game was created in 8 weeks at Breda University of Applied Science's CMGT programme. The project was commissioned by Transversal Professor of Sustainability Frans Melissen to open a dialogue between students about sustainability challenges in a workshop setting.
Us students were tasked to create "a game that helps us think and talk about sustainability". Climate change and other sustainability challenges represent problems that most are quite aware of but are not always willing or eager to discuss. For some because they represent problems that are "too big" for them to feel they can contribute to resolving them or too complex to know how to have a sensible discussion or develop a personal and professional perspective on tackling these challenges, while others are so scared of the threats these challenges represent for their own future that they feel uncomfortable talking about them and engaging with them.
We sought to design a game that aims to break this vicious circle; it ought to stimulate and encourage people to follow up playing the game with participating in a dialogue about sustainability challenges. The game is designed in such a way that it can be used in a group setting to first play the game, and then have a group discussion on their experiences and perspectives.
Due to this, the game is designed as accessible as possible to all sorts of players. Its graphics are kept charming but low-demanding and the game's controls are constrained to be mouse-only. In addition, the core gameplay loop is kept simple while still being engaging to be approachable by both gamers and non-gamers.
The workshop the game is used in can be downloaded on its itch.io page. Its purpose is to make players think about what role they wish to play in sustainability transitions and what they see others doing. Any person in any institution can download the game with the workshop files to run it themselves, making their peers think about their role in making the world a sustainable place.
Please note that, while the current build of the game was developed in 8 weeks by a team of 13 students, the concept itself was developed 8 weeks prior with a smaller team of designers, most of which continued with developing a full version of the game.
We hope you have as much fun playing INYIU as we have had creating it!
